Rosettes casket

venetian area, end of 14th-beginning of 15th Century

Rare "rosettes" box in carved and engraved bone depicting a Bacchanal.
The work represents an example of resistance of taste inspired by Byzantine ivory caskets, which, however, were decorated with religious scenes.
The production of these works can be placed between the end of the thirteenth century and the second half of the fourteenth century.
It appears identical, but with a different subject, to the preserved rosettes casket at the Bargello Museum in Florence, also historiated with a mythological subject.
Expertise by Dr. BENEDETTA CHIESI.
