"Child feeding a goat"

Sculpture in Carrara marble from the second half of the 19th century, of Roman origin, depicting a little girl feeding a goat.
The work has been obtained from a single block of marble, of impressive dimensions, which in itself represents an element of enhancement, together with the high quality of execution. The only drawback lies in the wear of the pedestal, which could have carried a possible signature or inscription, now lost.
In our opinion, the work can be attributed to Giovanni Maria Benzoni (Songavazzo, 28 August 1809 - Rome, 28 April 1873), a skilled sculptor from Bergamo who moved to Rome at a young age.
Given the clothing of the subject, it can be assumed that it is a commission from Northern Italy (perhaps from the upper Veneto) entrusted to an author of considerable importance, as well as national fame such as Giovanni Maria Benzoni.
